Board Governance
NALBOH is dedicated to assisting in the governing and leadership role of
boards of health by providing them with guidance in areas such as advocacy,
public health law, financial planning, strategic planning, and health officer
relationships. NALBOH works in partnership with other nationally renowned
public health organizations that promote and support the strengthening
of local public health agencies and the local public health system.
NALBOH
works in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and other partners to promote the National Public Health Performance Standards
Program (NPHPSP). NPHPSP is an assessment tool used to measure infrastructure
and capacity of public health systems. The governance assessment
tool, used primarily by boards of health, assists governing bodies in assessing
their capacity to provide oversight of the Ten Essential Public Health Services. To
learn more about participating in the assessment process, please click
on the National Public Health Performance Standards link.
NALBOH also supports
public health accreditation and works closely with the Public Health Accreditation
Board. Boards of health will play a crucial role in assisting local
public health jurisdictions in preparing for accreditation in 2011. To
learn more about how you can assist your local public health districts
in the accreditation process, please click on the accreditation link above.

Your Input Needed: Draft of Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals
In the 7 years since the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals were adopted by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, the field of public health has seen major changes - from the events of September 11, 2001 to new technologies and an aging workforce. On May 23, 2008, the Council unanimously approved the new draft of the Core Competencies. In refining and updating the Core Competencies, the Council focused on the "mid-tier" of public health workers - that is, those workers with an MPH (or related degree) and 5 years work experience, or individuals not having a public health degree but having at least 10 years of public health or public health-related work experience.
The Public Health Foundation (PHF) would like board of health members to provide them with your comments on the draft Core Competencies by clicking here. The public comment period ends December 31, 2008.
